Six miles of queues on M1 after ‘multi-vehicle pile-up’

Drivers are being warned of delays up to an hour when travelling on the M1 this morning (February 1) after a multi-vehicle collision.

The collision was first reported at around 6.45am on the southbound carriageway between Junction 9 (Redbourn) and Junction 8. (Hemel Hempstead)

There is at least six miles of queuing traffic as traffic officers respond to the incident.

However, the traffic camera suggests tailbacks are now as far back as Luton, as more vehicles join the motorway ahead of rush hour.

Highways England tweeted: “M1 #J9 to #J8 Southbound, there has been a multiple vehicle pile up in lane 4.

“Expect slight delays, our units are heading towards to clear this!”

Three lanes have now been closed, and Highways England say they are expecting to clear the road between 8am and 8.15am.

Highways England are expecting traffic conditions will then return to normal at around 8.45am.

It is not clear yet how many vehicles have been involved in the collision at this stage.
