Drivers are facing major delays on the M1 this evening (April 22) due to a multi-vehicle crash near Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
The incident was first reported at around 4.30pm, with Highways England confirming that emergency services are at the scene.
The crash was reported between Junction 8 (Hemel Hempstead) and Junction 9 (Redbourn) on the northbound carriageway. Traffic has been held twice on all four lanes as emergency services respond to the incident.
As of 4.45pm lanes three and four remain closed, with congestion stretching back as far as Junction 5 (Watford) – around eight miles.
There are also long queues on the M25 heading clockwise from junction 19 to junction 21 (for the M1) in Herts as traffic struggles to move onto the M1.

Highways England tweeted: “#M1 #J8 #Northbound multi vehicle incident has stopped traffic at Junction 8.
“Police and traffic officers are on scene. Please be patient as we try and clear the carriageway safely.”
Hertfordshire Constabulary have been approached for more information.
