Jonathan Ross had viewers in stitches last night as he made a comment about Hertfordshire on ITV’s hit show The Masked Singer.
The chat show host spoke after the Harlequin gave a dazzling rendition of Jimmy Durante’s Smile.
The Masked Singer, hosted by Joel Dommett, is proving a hit in the UK and is a show that sees singers battle it out while their identity is hidden by a mask.
In last night’s show (Saturday, January 16), Harlequin wowed the judges as she performed Smile, which is now synonymous with 2019’s Joker.
But Jonathan Ross’ comment stole the show.
After each performance, the judges – which for this series are Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Johnathan Ross – have to say who they think the masked singer is.
Rita Ora went for Desiree, while Mo Gilligan opted for singer Alexandra Burke.
Davina McCall admitted she initially wrote down Harry Potter author JK Rowling before settling on Next To Me singer Emily Sandé.
This tickled Jonathan Ross who, when it was his turn to give a guess, quipped: “These clues, it’s pointing us towards someone who’s like a newsreader, or a writer, or a journalist, not a singer.
“So it’s really throwing me, it’s really confusing.
“I mean you said JK Rowling and I thought that’s a possibility, she is essentially the richest woman in the world so it’s unlikely she would be spending a Saturday night in Hemel Hempstead.”
The comment sent the audience into fits of laughter, before the chat show host settled on Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.
The Masked Singer – which is now into its second UK season – is filmed in Bovingdon Studios at Bovingdon Airfield near Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
Filming is taking place under strict health and safety guidelines, including social distancing.
Last night, Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle was unveiled as the latest celebrity on the show.
He was disguised as Grandfather Clock and was revealed to viewers after finishing in the bottom two alongside Viking in the vote.
It appears we’ll have to wait a little longer to see who Harlequin truly is.
The Masked Singer continues on Saturday on ITV at 7pm.
