It’s a true British tradition and we’re rather spoilt for choice here in Hertfordshire.

In all corners of the county there are plenty of tasty choices when it comes to having the nation’s favourite takeaway.

The sheer range of places can make it choosing where to go a challenge – but we’ve luckily compiled a list of the top 10 to make it a little easier.

The list below is based on TripAdvisor’s ranking and takes into account fish and chip takeaways.

10) Polcaro’s Fish and Chips

Polcaro’s Fish and Chips in Cambridge Road, Hitchin, is an utter delight – just read the reviews.

One reviewer said in November: “The chip shop was well prepared for the Covid pandemic. The staff were polite, personable and really helpful. We had an extremely hot, freshly cooked supper. As a quick ‘off the cuff’ choice after we had dropped some gifts off at a friends close by, we feel like we have found a gem of a chippy. We will definitely be back!”

A glowing review and a popular hit in the town too. Well worth checking out this Bank Holiday weekend.

9) Sea World Fish and Chip Shop

Sea World Fish and Chip Shop on The Denes, Hemel Hempstead, has something for everyone.

It has the staple fish and chips plus tasty kebabs and burgers too.

It’s perhaps no surprise that it has a 4.5 star rating on the back of 61 happy reviews.

One customer said in their review: “This is a suburban takeaway, mainly for kebabs and fish and chips. They have been here a long time, very reliable and friendly. The fish is great and we’ve tried several other things, only problem is the portions are so big! :)”

We’ll take big portions any day of the week.

8) The Ridgeway Fish Bar

The Ridgeway Fish Bar in St Albans is a popular takeaway in the city.

It boasts a 4.5 rating based on 182 TripAdvisor reviews.

One customer wrote in March this year: “What a treat! Beautiful fish & chip dinner, grease free crunchy golden batter, gluten free version delicious, easy to order time slot for collection. Will be returning for sure.”

7) Codland Fish & Chips

Codland Fish & Chips in Courtlands Drive, Watford, offers a delightful takeaway that’s perfect for sharing with family or friends.

It has a five star TripAdvisor rating based on 55 reviews.

One reviewer said in March this year: “This has constantly been the best fish and chips in Watford for years. If you haven’t tried you don’t know what you are missing.”

Another review suggests it’s cash-only so, if you’re turning up, ensure you have some spare change to hand.

This fish and chip shop is right next to the station in Berkhamsted and consistently receives glowing reviews.

It enjoys a TripAdvisor rating of 4.5 based on 145 reviews and is popular in the town.

One happy reviewer said in June last year: “Best fish and [chips] in Hertfordshire. Great food, excellent service, clean, very professional. Highly recommended.”

From cod, rock, haddock, skate and scampi, Fishy Plaice has pretty much everything covered.

The shop on Catherine Street, St Albans, proves a hit with customers and the reviews speak for themselves.

On TripAdvisor, it has a rating of 4.5 based on 188 reviews, and one satisfied diner said: “Stopped by yesterday evening ‘during lockdown part 2’ to get a small cod & chips & have to say, fish was absolutely beautiful, meaty, flakey and well cooked, batter light and crispy, chips – great. Highly rate the shop, polite staff, reasonably priced food and brilliant. Will deffo return.”

Lemon Plaice in Church Street, Welwyn, has been described by customers as ‘excellent’ – and it’s easy to see why.

The town’s popular fish and chip shop has an average of 4.5 stars out of more than 100 reviews.

One happy customer left a glowing review and said: “Best fish and chips around. Had a few during lockdown, consistently excellent food cooked and delivered by very good people.”

And last October, the shop gave out some free school meals to children after England footballer Marcus Rashford’s inspired campaign.

3) Godfrey’s

Godfrey’s operates two sites in Herts – one in Harpenden and the other in Bushey.

It’s a family-run business that opened in 2012 and cooks delicious food to order and, as a result, it’s no surprise that it has an average of 4.5 stars based off an incredible 760 reviews.

One customer said: “The best fish and chips for miles around. During Lockdown we have enjoyed weekly takeaways of the always excellent fish and chips. Service is friendly and prompt.”

That’s a glowing review if we ever saw one.

The Golden Plaice in Shenley Road, Borehamwood, is one of the county’s favourites.

It’s the best-ranked restaurant in the town and is renowned for its tasty fish and chips.

It has a TripAdvisor rating of 4.5 based on 238 glowing reviews and regularly does down a treat.

If you’re looking for a delicious fish and chips takeaway then this is surely the crème de la crème.

The Fish & Chip Shop on Stevenage’s high street is the highest-ranked in the county.

It has a perfect five star rating based on 379 satisfied customers and would prove perfect for that Bank Holiday treat.

One happy diner left a glowing review and said: “We take our fish & chips seriously and we have never been disappointed. We used the delivery service for the first time recently due to enforced self-isolation and the quality of the food was just as good and arrived in 15 minutes. The gluten free curry sauce is a must.”
