England rugby star’s surprise for ‘inspirational’ Herts community hero

A member of the team at the Amazon delivery station in Herts has been named as one of the company’s Covid community heroes in recognition of his support for the community.

Paul Fawkes won an Amazon Star award, a UK-wide Amazon competition seeking to recognise and reward community heroes during the coronavirus pandemic.

Paul, who works at the station in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, was nominated by his colleagues for his voluntary work for St John Ambulance and his role at Fullerians Rugby Club in Watford, where he’s also a volunteer first aider.

The news was delivered to rugby fan Paul by former England captain, Chris Robshaw, in a special video message.

Paul has been a volunteer with St John Ambulance for 18 months after being inspired to work with the charity by his wife Linda and his four young daughters, who have been volunteering and supporting the organisation themselves over the last eight years.

The voluntary role with St John Ambulance sees Paul attend sporting events and local community events, like his first outing with the charity at Vicarage Road.

Paul helped a young man in the stands who had sprained his ankle – an experience that has stayed with him ever since.

And sport is a theme that runs through Paul’s voluntary work.

He also takes on a first aid position with Fullerians Rugby Club where his daughter, Grace, plays for the club’s under 15s side.

In tribute to Paul’s work in the community, the Amazon team in Hemel Hempstead surprised him with a donation of £5,000 for his daughter’s rugby club and a £500 Amazon gift voucher to use himself.

Paul said: “I can’t believe I’ve won an Amazon Star award and to get a message from Chris Robshaw made it even more special.

“I love volunteering and the feeling I get when I help someone is indescribable. I’d like to thank everyone at Amazon for this fantastic award and for the donation to the rugby club – it’ll go such a long way to supporting everyone at Fullerians.”

Ryan Padley, Senior Delivery Station Manager at Amazon in Hemel Hempstead, added: “Paul is an inspiration to us all at the Amazon delivery station in Hemel Hempstead and we’re all really proud of his work in our community.

“It’s fantastic to have one of the Amazon Star winners here in Hemel Hempstead and I’d like to congratulate Paul on his very well-deserved award.”
