Department store Debenhams has confirmed that its gift cards will expire days before Christmas, potentially leaving shoppers out of pocket.
The chain entered administration at the start of the month and is now preparing to close all stores for good.
There is no date yet for the closure of all its 124 stores – including in Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire – but closing down sales have already begun as the stores prepare to get rid of their stock.
It’s also expected that the online store will close, after the last potential buyers stepped away.

The news has left shoppers with questions about their existing gift cards and vouchers, which could soon become worthless.
Debenhams has now confirmed that they can still be used – however only up until 11.59pm on Sunday (December 20), leaving shoppers with under 48 hours to spend them.
All gift cards, e-gfit cards and vouchers must be spent before the cut-off point or they will become invalid.
These can be used either in-store or online.
